A wise man once said, ”We did not inherit the Earth from our forefathers, we borrowed it from our children”; and rightly so. Taking everything for granted, we have been too reckless in our exploitation of the nature and all its gifts. All this talk of being ‘eco-friendly’ sounds like a poor excuse when one starts thinking of the times one has used one bucket too many while bathing, or left the switches in your room on even as you went out to have a good time, all at nature’s expense. The effort of ensuring the existence of humans and all other life forms on the planet necessitates the exercising of sustainable development practices, practices which will ensure that not only our generation, but all the succeeding ones as well as all other forms of all continue to live happily on our Mother earth. Sustainable Development means ensuring that all the Industrial development, manufacturing processes and natural resources utilisation, are practised in such a way that they do not harm the nature, do not exhaust the non-renewable resources and do not pose a threat to our future existence on this planet. It is important each one of us, as an individual, and all of us collectively realize how crucial it is to make all our endeavours sustainable so that they only supplement and compliment nature and do not prove detrimental to it in any way. We, as individuals, can take small steps in our own capacity to promote the harmonious co-existence of everyone on the Earth and well-being of our Mother Nature. Steps from as small as ensuring all the taps are tightly closed to as big as ensuring that your Organisation is carbon-negative will prove very significant in this direction. There have been some important discussions in this direction at the world-level, from the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change to various world summits, but it will be very positive if each of us can take it on as our moral duty and not just leave it to the Governments to take care of.
Realizing how important it is to make everyone aware of the need of the hour, Literati-2012 has taken on Smart and Sustainable Development as its theme and has decided to promote this very noble initiative in its own small way. This theme acquires all the more relevance when one thinks of how we as students will be the technocrats, managers and leaders of tomorrow. At Literati-2012, we believe that when we are the leaders of tomorrow, and change is what the present world demands, why not we be the change, why not we be the leaders of change, change which is constructive, change which is in the best interests and most importantly, change which can ensure smiles on the faces of each one of us as well as for all the generations to come. There are numerous initiatives planned in this regard, and we expect all the participants to make Smart and Sustainable Development their motto for now, and be equal partners in this small but very bold and significant initiative of ours.
